Luxury Goods Sales Are Expected to Decline in 2020 While the Industry Is Thriving in China

The pandemic has taken a toll on luxury goods sales, except in China, wherein it is currently booming. A recent report shows that China is set to become the biggest luxury market in the next five years.

At a time in which luxury spending has been drastically falling around the globe, China’s upscale segment is expected to grow into the world’s largest luxury market by 2025. The country’s wealthiest citizens chose to stay within their area of residence because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, they have been splurging on designer items, the finest wines, and jewelry in the comforts of their own cities.

Pre-pandemic, European, and American luxury markets were powered by international travelers, particularly Chinese tourists. This caused a decline in luxury goods sales among other countries and will continue to affect Western luxury markets in the coming years. A report from Bain & Co. has predicted that affluent Chinese individuals will be spending more in their country of residence rather than traveling in the next few years.

Powerful Chinese Luxury Market

In 2019, wealthy Chinese consumers comprised one-third of the world’s luxury spending. Since travel restrictions followed the pandemic, these former frequent travelers and luxury spenders will be spending more time in their home towns and focus their spending in China. According to Bain & Co.’s 2020 Fall Luxury report, mainland China will be the only region poised to experience YOY growth by 45% to accumulate up to 44 billion euros. 

Bain expects luxury sales to recover during the holiday season, and it will happen at varying paces in each region. China is anticipated to recuperate much faster than in other Asian countries. Meanwhile, the United States and European luxury markets may continue to slow down as both nations struggle with COVID-related measures. This could result in China overtaking Europe and America by 2025 when affluent Chinese consumers comprise of 50% of global luxury spending.

The Future of the Global Luxury Market

Globally, the luxury market is expected to recover its strength towards the end of 2022 until early 2023. Bain suggests that this will be possible through the growth of digital sales and the Chinese market’s growth. 

As consumers have adjusted to the new normal, online purchasing of luxury items has reached 23% of the total sales this year—twice as much as 2019’s reported 12%. Bain predicts that e-commerce will become the largest platform for global luxury spending by 2025. In fact, luxury e-commerce channel, Farfetch, has already reported a 70% surge in their third-quarter sales. CEO Jose Neves believes that the luxury industry will not go back to its pre-Covid state.

Additionally, experience-based goods such as gourmet dining, fine wines, luxury vehicles, and private jets are performing better than personal luxury goods. These categories suffered from only a 10% drop compared to the 23% decline in personal luxury goods. A possible reason for this trend is that most people are spending lavishly on items that they can easily consume and enjoy. As such, experience-based luxury goods are expected to recover faster than other forms of indulgences.
